Thanks for pointing that out. I had considered that, but I was probably thinking about the difference between selling no products because you can't upload them and selling a product that may or may not have a potential to be accessed without authorisation. Which would you choose?

doing it this way will leave the file unprotected. search engines might find it, and the customers can send the link to all their friends. Still not a good enought solution.

Hi Jill
Firstly, thanks for popping past and commenting. :) Much appreciated.
And secondly, thanks for the comments. I think it is only when you do start to have some experience with the media that you realise that it can be a friend or foe, depending on how you represent yourself. I mean, if the PM can get slayed by the media, why would we think we were exempt? Having said that, we don't bite the hand that feeds. For many, free publicity has taken their businesses to the very top. I guess like anything else in life, we need to tread carefully. :)

Hayley - I love this piece. Such great advice! I have appeared in nearly 40 media stories and can report that all these pitfalls really exist. The thing I would add is there is no guarantee that none of these things won't happen to you even if you use a publicist. The trick is to be strategic and smart in how you approach your media - whether you're doing it yourself, or getting some help. Thanks for such a thought provoking piece!

I spent just half an hour on the phone with Hayley and her energy, her interest, and her knowledge made me come alive to my own possibilities again. Hayley come up with creative and practical ideas to jump start my business advertising again after my enforced sabbatical. I fully expect to begin receiving bookings regularly in the new year. Thanks Hayley!

I think a lot of small business owners can relate to that. it's definitely a good challenge for us all to be more concious of what we are doing. Let me know how you get on with that! :)

What a great post and so very timely! Of course I'm guilty of spending waaaaay too much time working 'in' my business! Even now I'm typing this from my laptop, in the evening, watching tv and spending time with my family at the same time! Most days I feel like I just can't 'turn off'! Great resolution for the new year I think :)

The power of testimonials can never be underestimated. People, especially nowadays, will only purchase products or avail services which have been referred to them by people whom they know. But most of the times, this is not an option that is in the hands of the business owner, he has to do the next best thing, which is to get testimonials from his past clients.

Congratulations on a FABULOUS cookbook, the launch and all the hard work that is paying off! I realise that Grace is an exceptional person with amazing drive and ability and so this was a great person to partner with as your first foray into book publishing, but I hope you really GET how valuable your skills really are in helping others manifest their dreams!

With that being said... I REALLY want to talk to you about an online magazine idea before you get too famous and busy! I've been biting my nails waiting until after the launch of this book, which I just KNEW would be a smash hit!

Can't take the credit for the design work of the book, as Renee Fulton layed up the book (our designer from Finally at 40 Life Begins Magazine), but can take the credit for the concept of the book and what's on the pages cause that was my contribution. :)) And we can't forget Grace's recipes, Jill Bonanno's proofreading and Christine Finlay's photography. It has been a real team effort to get this publication together and I'm so excited.

And yes, you are right, it is damn exciting!

And I'll probably have a few champagnes at the Hilton to celebrate and calm my nerves before I have to stand up and address 120 corporates and sponsors and thank them for their contribution as well as introducing Grace. That's probably going to be the hardest part of the project - although I do love to be in front of people, so fingers-crossed i won't blow it.

Thanks for posting again, Jeanne. Appreciate your support.

I don't earn much in my business so I have a part time job as well.
I give to charities when I can & have put chosen ones in my will.

I started running meditation groups & asked for a $5 donation.
As the money added up I would ask the group which charity should recieve this money.
We ended up adorting a tiger, panad & orangutan plus put gifts under the wishing tree two yrs running.
It was a small way to contribute, it was a feel good exercise.
I have also volunteered a lot, it was my way of giving back as I am not loaded.

Wow...what a journey, BridgetJane. Indeed...I completely get what you are saying here. I learned that many years ago when I was in a job where I brought home large bonuses every quarter. I'd get the thousands of dollars in my hand and I'd look around my home and say to myself, "what more do I really need?" For sure, I could have replaced every item of furniture in my house, because most of it was either given to us or brought from a secondhand shop, but I genuinely knew that I didn't need anything more.

I think when we realise that money is just another commodity, to be traded, and lose our "love of money" that it flows more readily to use. When we normalise it, instead of making it our god or our be all and end all.

Thanks so much for sharing your journey. I love that you have found a place that is more you. By your description, sounds like somewhere I'd love to exist too.

Thanks so much for popping past and sharing, Sharon. I completely understand what you are saying. I also think we need to be very aware of our reasons for giving. Is it because we are compelled by love and compassion or motivated by a need in ourselves to be validated? I have been guilty of this in the past...of giving to feel accepted, respected, loved and appreciated. Also, are we being motivated by a desire to rescue another person from their own lack of organisation or ability to make it happen on their own? I have also been guilty of that in the past...taking control out of a desire to make things better for the other person. But I have realise that difficulty and struggle produces character and perseverance, which is another lesson I learned from Tracey Hodgkins. That if we remove the struggle from people, we prevent them from developing their resilience, innovation and coping skills. So there has to be a wise line that we draw between our genuine compassion and what is needed and required and our own needs for validation, for control, to rescue others.

I genuinely think this is a topic well worthy of discussion and so appreciate you popping past to join in. Keep pressing towards that destiny, Sharon. :)

I so agree with you Natalie. The beginning of my awakening to my worth was when I interviewed Tracey Hodgkins for Finally at 40 Life Begins Magazine (the article is in this issue). I had the most amazing hour and a half with Tracey, who was Telstra Business Woman of the Year 2005 and heads up an innovative education dynasty that is now international. When I asked Tracey about pricing she told me several things. Firstly that when she was wholesaling she always charged three times the cost price. Secondly, that whenever she left the office to do official business she made sure that she was paid what it would cost to have someone come into her business to fill her shoes for the time she was away from her business. Now when you look at your worth from that perspective...taking out the "you" factor and substituting what someone with your level of knowledge, skills and ability would charge for the same tasks, suddenly your worth becomes very obvious and real. The hard part is having the courage to ask for what you are worth.

To me there just needs to be that balance between seeing everyone you meet as a potential "prospect" and recognising them as a human being. If we connect with integrity, then the relationship will develop from the right space. But we also need to value ourselves, as you have so eloquently shared.

Thank you so much for popping past and posting. I think it's a great discussion for us to be having and I appreciate your perspective.

HI Hayley,
Great topic, thanks for raising an issue that is close to the hearts of many. I love to give. I always have. At times that has really worn me down emotionally and financially but in the past I would keep giving way beyond my means, physically and financially. When the idea came to me to create The Enlightened Goddesses Business womens Network, a place where women could come together to support and encourage each other toward success, I knew we would be learning together how to operate from our heart and create successful businesses at the same time. After all success supports everyone, as you make money you spend more which in turns supports other businesses to grow. A poverty conscious community grows noones business.
So the dilemna I had was, "how will I educate business women to understand and believe that we can create successful businesses that satisfy our financial needs as well as our emotional needs". My solution was to coin a phrase "creating conscious connections in business". When we act from our true self and connect authentically with others, become conscious in our thoughts and actions, and contribute to others, we will attract like minded people who too, are committed to creating relationshiops with heart based businesses. After all what you have with your clients or potential clients is a relationship- one of trust and honesty. The first step in creating business success for any one is that they become clear on who they are, what they are doing and how they are going to do it differently- they need to check in with their values, ie why are they in business and they need to identify that the most important person in their business is them and their team. If we continue to put ourselves last then we are little use to others, we stop the flow of abundance not only in our business but the community around us, and we burn out and forget to have fun.
Everyone wants to be valued, and I know that business owners place huge value upon their customers rights, care and service, but what if we were to give ourselves the same value? We would charge accordingly, work with pride and encourage others to do the same AND guess what we would attract clients who valued us too.
I do believe we can find a healthy balance between the bottom line and the heart line. It just starts with being WHO you really are.
Thanks Hayley for sharing this great topic with us all

What a great post Hayley - thank you so much for starting the conversation!! It's also that challenge between just giving stuff because that's what makes your heart sing & yet having a valued transaction with someone else. This is a journey that is still evolving for me, but I do know that my perspective is changing & I am valuing myself & what I have to offer more. It's the only way that I will end up living my destiny.
Thanks for the post Hayley xxx

Hayley i love the discussion you've opened here& for simplicity i will say i agree 100% with what Jeanne said :)
I have swung from one end of the spectrum to the other. Ive never bn ALL about money, as im PASSIONATELY attached to what i do& GENUINELY care that i make a difference, however 5 years ago i only knew the MATERIAL world& never thought twice that there was another way to be "rich" in life....
One day i did a profound meditation that revealed to me with UTTER CLARITY what really lived in my heart! I was shocked& shattered...! All the things i had on my vision board i didnt want- the beachfront mansion, the 2Audi's, the shiny, new STUFF...!! All i yearned for was a humble haven on property in a natural setting, a peaceful& more "handmade" home, a place oozing warmth, authenticity & uniqueness...here began my challenge with money....! I started to realise i had bn living all from my head...& i was literally STARVING...starving for love, connection, meaning & PEACE...
where i am now is exactly where you speak of... Working out how to ALWAYS come from my heart WHILST bringing in $.... I HIGHLY VALUE my work, i KNOW its unique & i KNOW its lifechanging... My task now is to create something that enables me to share that with others whilst maintaining my heart centered approach :)

Thanku again & lots of love!

I completely agree, Jeanne. I too have had that shift over the past few months. And I do agree. That was one of the things that did come to mind as I was writing this because I want to challenge everyone on this issue...whether you are the bottom line driven business owner that has forgotten your heart or the heart driven business owner that simply can't do what you want to do because of limited funds and thinking.

I have seen your growth, Jeanne and I hope that really does continue because of where you heart is, so keep going girl. I think when we allow others hearts to sing and their feet to dance we get treated to the greatest show on earth!

Thanks so much for sharing.

Hayley, this has been topmost in my mind since going into business too. It's a toughie, I have to admit, and initially I did give away a lot in exchange for little. I think it really boils down to our own self worth and valuing ourselves, our talents and the time and money we've invested in our education, not to mention life lessons and experience. I've struggled forever with a 'poor' mentality around money and never believed that I could ask for a decent price for my work. I even argued with my mentor and refused to raise my fees because I thought I was compromising my values. My reason for doing what I do is to allow others to bring their dreams to reality through my design.
But in the last few months that's shifted, I've had a change of heart. I was working too many hours for not enough pay and my health and family were suffering. My business was growing so fast I couldn't keep up and enlisted a sub-contractor, so now I had to charge enough to cover her fees. And you know what? As soon as I put my fees up I started to attract clients who can afford me and don't try to haggle or offer contra deals. It's all about mindset I think. So far that seems to be working, I value my self and my clients do too. I still manage to make my client's hearts sing (that's my priority) and for the first time in my life there's money in the bank - that feels pretty damn awesome too!

Hi Tina
Thanks for popping over and fabulous to know that you got something out of the article in Social Media Woman Magazine and came on a mission to find my principals for branding. Did you have any success in locating these on the site? I have a training session that I did for Women Can International Inc posted on the website. If you have trouble finding it, I'd be happy to direct you. I have also done a few articles for Pam now on this subject, which are posted on the site. If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to pop me a message via my contact us page.
Thanks,
Hayley

You don't have to create a widget...just post your links to posts on your website that people will be interested in and before you know it, the traffic will come and find you. Just like you found your way here today. :)) I'm still on MySpace, but I have to say I haven't really felt it had much value other than to connect with me a great friend who saw my profile and contacted me from it. Thanks for popping past and posting! I appreciate your comments.

I agree. But I had a google profile for years, and you can build a website on google and use google annalytics. Do I think google + may be on to something here. Heathy competition for facebook is a good thing, but I'd hate to see it die like MySpace. Though for music myspace us still where people search first I think. Buuuut how does one make their own widget to add to social networks to drive people to their site. I use the "for more info go to inkyglass.com" but I am not that computer savy. Peace.

Thanks so much for popping past, Deb and commenting. Yes, it has been an absolute delight to work with Steven and to see him take to technology with such vigour was so inspiring Deb. By the end of our sessions he knew his way around his phone so much better than I did! I can't wait for him to start posting his updates as he hits the different towns around Oz. I think it's going to be a great journey. You may like to subscribe to his YouTube.com channel too, http://youtube.com/FairDinkumDiscounts

Yes, I think we are not alone. I think sometimes we feel like we are thrusting ourselves upon others but sincerely, you never know when someone is going to need what you have and if you are not letting people know regularly what you are up to they will go to whoever is. I also think it's a matter of belief. Do you believe that what you have is valuable, worth of sharing? If you do, then you won't feel wrong about sharing it. If you have a question in your mind, then perhaps you will have a problem. :)

Hayley, I've had a very similar experience. I've belonged to Toastmasters since 2001 and my current club since 2004. One of the people in the club talked about how their company was hiring a coach - and they had no idea I did coaching! You're absolutely right too about it being my own responsibility. Made me much more aware of how what I'm living day to day has to get externalized so folks know what I do and can use my services when they are a match.

Thanks, Deb. We need to be the new Empowered Entrepreneurs that show how to lead with our hearts and not just with our wallets in mind. I think that Andrew Crawford's post on how to attract and keep customers is really resonating on this point... "hmmm... all I know is traditional retail, and that is, people are looking for a release from the mundane when they shop, they want instant gratification, a 'Love me' buzz if you like, so to achieve this in a shop front scenario we create a feeling of warmth, gratitude, helpfulness and importance. If a normal retail shop cannot provide this type of service then they better have damn good products that are in hot demand to compensate. I wonder if the 'online' world is any different???" No, I don't think the online world is any different in terms of people wanting to feel all of those connections, but hey world, stop looking for what you can make off the next person and start looking for what you can give. If you have a product or service that is going to genuinely improve their life, they are going to be more than willing to reach into their pockets to reward you for the opportunity. Let's turn this whole model upside down and the strategy is based on the principle that "sow and you will reap"...be concerned for the other's welfare before you own and you will see a dynamic change in your business success.

You and I both have learned much from the communities we have belonged to and I totally agree with what you are stating here. It takes time and relationship building to create s mastermind that really works and if the heart is not involved, then I don't want to participate. I've been in too many communities where the real goal was just to get business from the people you are in the group with. It's a new mindset and you've got it Hayley! Thanks for including me!

FYI, this website http://deepwidget.com offers similar plugins (or widgets) which you can add to your website without having to change the layout of your webpage. There are many plugins other than the social networking type to choose from. You can also preview the result (your webpage + the plugin, with animation and all) before you publish the result, which is pretty cool.

Hi Leanne
Thanks for popping past. I think it's great to have a continuous improvement attitude. It's kind of like a retail shop. You don't want to move your stock around too much cause you will confuse your regular customers but you do want to dress the window effectively to attract new ones. ;)
Thanks for popping past and commenting.

Thanks, Trish. Yes I do feel there has to be a balance between the two and it really does depend on your target market. I know people who buy from sales letter pages and people who detest them. It is horses for courses. :)) Thanks for stopping by.

Great thoughts Hayley. I agree with white space. I also understand that all space on a website is valuable real estate. I am creative and so is my target audience and I find, personally, that cluttered pages are really hard for me to read and look through. This is why I tend to keep a lot of spaces in my copy and endeavour to not have too many things everywhere. There has to be a balance for the reader, and for you- the business owner who needs the page to convert!
Thanks
Trish :-)

I definitely agree with you. So many websites these days are so full of information on every single page...I just click off. Everyone seems to have wordpress sites and some seem to have every extension they can have on them. My site is a Joomla site and I asked my clients what were the things they wanted to see and went from there. I constantly update and try to streamline it as much as possible. Thank you so much for your easy to read and informative post.

Thanks, Jennie Amarto, for posting some comments about this blog on Facebook. I thought they should be shared here so that others can hear your wisdom, Jennie.
"In summary -good design does not EQUAL business conversion. It's important to have a design that's user friendly, but I personally would not strip back my "Call to Action" points and the side bar etc, which is the very purpose of the site in the first place. IF I built a site to win a design, then sure I would discard all the business CTA elements. I think it's a balance between friendly design (friendly to the eye of the visitor, business brand AND personality of the owner). I would never however compromise good business over design. They work together IF the purpose of the site is to create a sales funnel. Different purposes have different reasons. My clients expect a web business so the sites must have business functionality and process and that includes side bars with offers etc." - Jennie Armato, via Facebook.

It is apparent that the environment where Mastermind groups thrive must have several factors in place, such as a committeemen, genuine caring for team members as well as being on the same business level.I know that it is very useful to us so i like it.

Great tips Hayley, I do many of these and the others I will implement this year (such as having an accounts day!). I outsource my accounts to free up my time, but I DO have to schedule time to get my pile of papers in to some sort of order to help use the time well. Outsourcing is a great idea, to allow refocus on what you love or what you need to do. I help organisations and small business refocus, by taking care of any business support tasks, such as social media, marketing, mail list management, event management and admin tasks. Get someone else to do your research or streamline your social media channels. Love your day by outsourcing what you don't! Partner with a virtual assistant and refocus!

Hi,

I would be interested in joining, but it would depend on cost and when the sessions were run. I work very long days Monday, Wednesday and Friday and probably wouldn't be able to make it on those days.

What Jenny has experienced with Hayley is right on the button. Hayley has also been incredibly involved with the promotional material for my business and I have to say that her work is of the ultimate standard. The one thing that stood out for me was the way Hayley was easily able to interpret what I was all about and everything she has created for me has brought out my true essence. This woman is amazing and any business would benefit greatly from her gifts. I will be forever thankful for the opportunity to meet Hayley and I know she will remain an integral part of my business for a very long time indeed.

What a fabulous article Hayley and spot on the money. If we all knew everything right from the word go then what would there be to learn. Growing into what you know you can be is vital for success and thinking big is necessary. What puts most people off is that it is sometimes scary because it means stepping outside our comfort zone however, we have the choice to stagnate or to grow and I know what I prefer! Thank you for sharing this valuable information. It is GOLD!

Hi Lisa
Lovely to see you on the website and checking out my work. And hey, thanks so much for the feedback.
We don't have a magazine viewer up yet for the back issues, but it is in the pipeline. You could have a look at the magazine at your local newsagents. The new mag will be in the newsagents by mid to late next week.
I'd love to hear your feedback on the magazine.
Thanks for leaving a comment.

Hi Hayley, I didn't notice the link to the magazine so googled and ended up at the old site (which is great as I see the massive difference) much clearer and user friendly. I would like a way to see a little of the inside of the magazine, will send the link on to my "French" loving friends. Excellent work!
ciao for now

Yes, women can. After a full life of raising a son, a teaching career and numerous other detours, I finally fulfilled my lifelong dream of recording a jazz CD. It was released in 2009 and got wonderful play world round. It is especially appropriate for the holidays!

Love the concept and I will find your magazine to make sure I get to read it. I am also a forty year old woman that has had lots happen to her career at this stage in my life. I think forty is fabulous as we are more confident in expressing ourselves and chasing our goals.
Where is your magazine based from.
I actually write for two national decorating magazines and Style magazine and I have loved this new side of my working life.

At the risk of this sounding like a mutual admiration club here, I think that you have set the example for me.

I so appreciated the sincerity which which you supported myself and others on the WIB Connect site (which is a fabulous site for women in business). I think there is so much for us all to learn from one another if we have an attitude of openness.

Thanks again for you caring support! Super appreciate it.

I have to say I am so proud to have been nominated for your supporter of the month. And I have to say I have loved supporting you. You too have supported me in many ways that you probably aren't even aware of. It has been an absolute pleasure to have been able to watch you evolve and come into your own destiny that you have created for yourself and everyone around you.

This has been a fabulous month as so many good things have come my way and being nominated as your Supporter of the Month was one of the first. So thank you Hayley and I look forward to seeing what else evolves for both of us. Enjoy the journey! Chris Lucas

My page has changed, but maybe it is taking some time to roll out. It was supposed to be as of 23 August, 2010. I'll see what others are saying.

That's an interesting perspective. I'd love to hear more about why you think that? Forgive my ignorance, but Isn't the Commonwealth Bank the Bank fo the Commonwealth?

The Australian election campaign 2010 appears to me to be a lost cause because seemingly none of the main parties are campagning on the most important issue - the re-nationalisation and restoring of Australia's biggest banking asset, the Bank of the Commonwealth. No other issues are of any consequence by any comparison.

My pleasure, Maureen. You probably have no idea how much your support has encouraged me to keep going many times when I wondered if it was really worth all the effort.

You're a legend! Enjoy the music too!

Hayley, thank you so very much for giving me the opportunity to write a bit about my company and for your own ongoing encouragement and support. I hope one day our paths will cross in person.

Kayt McGeary That it did! Thank u so much creaticians! I dont think of myself as technically illiterate but some things can seem a little too technical & rather than googling it & wasting time trying to get an understanding of it (which isn't really part of my arena of professional services) this image was instant grasping of the subject so that i could follow up & be a good client rather than a lost & confused 1. Win / Win & isnt ghat how we want business 2 be?! :-)
